Bandicoots are nocturnal marsupials from Australia and New Guinea. The 19 different species of bandicoots live in various terrain: plains, forests, and deserts. The bandicoot’s pouch faces backwards so that dirt doesn’t enter the pouch while the animal burrows in its tunnels. Bandicoots are omnivorious and hop around on their hind legs like their much larger cousins, the kangaroo. Several species of these mammals are in danger of extinction.
