With bold yellow plumes streaming from its head and a jet-black body, this puffin is impossible to miss\u2014and equally fascinating to learn about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s head to the Pacific and meet the flamboyant <strong>Tufted Puffin<\/strong> (<em>Fratercula cirrhata<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where They Live<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Tufted Puffin calls the <strong>North Pacific Ocean<\/strong> home. Its breeding range stretches from:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <strong>coast of California<\/strong> up through <strong>Alaska<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Across the <strong>Bering Sea<\/strong> to <strong>Russia<\/strong>, <strong>Japan<\/strong>, and the <strong>Kuril Islands<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These puffins prefer nesting on remote islands with grassy slopes or cliffs. In the U.S., they\u2019re most easily spotted along the <strong>coasts of Alaska and the Pacific Northwest<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to Spot a Tufted Puffin<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Tufted Puffins are instantly recognizable during the breeding season thanks to their:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Creamy yellow feather tufts<\/strong> that sweep back from above each eye<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Bright white face<\/strong> contrasting with a <strong>glossy black body<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Large orange bill<\/strong> that rivals the Atlantic Puffin\u2019s in brightness<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Orange feet<\/strong> and a stocky build<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In winter, they shed the face tufts and become harder to distinguish, with darker faces and duller bills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Diet and Diving Skills<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Like their puffin cousins, Tufted Puffins are skilled underwater hunters. Their menu includes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Small fish such as anchovies and sand lance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Squid and other marine invertebrates<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>They dive up to <strong>200 feet deep<\/strong>, using their wings to \u201cfly\u201d underwater and their webbed feet to steer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Breeding Behavior<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Tufted Puffins are burrow nesters\u2014yes, even on steep islands!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>They dig burrows in soft soil or nest in crevices among rocks.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Only <strong>one egg<\/strong> is laid per season.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Both parents share incubation and feeding duties.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>After about six weeks, the chick (puffling!) is ready to fledge and will head out to sea alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conservation Notes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Tufted Puffins are currently listed as <strong>Least Concern globally<\/strong>, but regional declines are raising concern, particularly in parts of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Washington and Oregon<\/strong>, where colonies have dramatically shrunk<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>California<\/strong>, where they are now very rare<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Threats include warming seas, reduced prey availability, human disturbance, and invasive species like rats that prey on eggs and chicks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fun Puffin Fact<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Tufted Puffins spend more than <strong>eight months of the year<\/strong> at sea.
