Butaan

Butaan

The Butaan, also called Gray’s monitor (Varanus olivaceus), is an extremely rare monitor lizard that lives in the Philippines. It is so rare that it was believed to be extinct until rediscovered in the 1970s.

The Butaan is the world’s largest fruit-eating monitor lizard, growing up to seven feet in length. Very little is known about them, but they have been the subject of a study that aired on Animal Planet — the first time they were ever filmed in the wild.

The Butaan has a reputation in its area of being delicious to eat, so they are under threat from hunting as well as critical loss of habitat.

Bearded Dragon

Bearded Dragon

Australian bearded dragons (Pogona vitticeps) are in the Agama family, which is composed of 325 species in 40 genera. Other members of this family include frilled dragons (Chlamydosaurus kingii), tree dragons (Diporihora superba), Asian water dragons (Hydrosaurus amboinensis), and the thorny devil (Moloch horridus). Beardies got their names because, when disturbed, they will extend a flap of skin under the jaw, simulating a “beard.”

Bearded dragons are one of the easiest reptile species to keep in captivity and are certainly among the friendliest. An agressive dragon is rare and most can be handled easily by adults and children.

The dragon in the photo is a five month old female owned by animalpages.com.
